ABOUT HUMMELS. Hummels are the result of a partnership between Sister Maria Innocentina Hummel, Franz Goebel and The Convent of the Siessen in the 1930’s. The sketch art of Sister Maria Innocentia began to appear on in the 1930s in Germany and Switzerland, mostly pastoral drawings of children. Around 1934 porcelain maker Franz Goebel saw the drawings and thought they could be turned into porcelain figurines. The agreement with Goebel was that the sister would have final approval over every figurine and that it would be incised with her signature. To this day, each Hummel must be approved by the Convent of Siessen. These figures became extremely popular in the U. Especially with German immigrants on the East Coast. The popularity of the Hummel continued to grow around the end of World War II when many American soldiers overseas saw the Hummel as a great gift to send home to their mothers and sweethearts.

Figurines began when a porcelain shop owner discovered the postcard images created by a Bavarian nun in 1934. Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel’s religious drawings and paintings, mostly of children, were transformed into porcelain figurines by Franz Goebel. The figurines were well-liked in Bavaria and across Germany and grew in popularity when American soldiers brought them home after World War II. Hummel quality is amazing – and known around the globe as the best there is! Master sculptor Arthur Moeller first made this piece in 1955. In 1990, Goebel issued a special edition of “Crossroads” to commemorate the demise of the Berlin Wall. Limited to 20,000 pieces worldwide, it is the same figure except the “Halt” sign on the post is placed at the base of the post as if it had fallen off or been torn down. This figure is the regular production model with the sign on the post with “Ost”, or East and “West”. Piece is in excellent condition with no defects. No cracks, chips, or breaks. Measures 6 1/2″ high, is 4 1/2″ wide and is 3 round. Weighs 10 ounces before packaging. Listing code PT220227.004522m. We have many Hummel items in our store “Thompson’s Fine Collectibles”.
