The figurine is titled “School Girls” (#177/I), which depicts 3 young girls talking to each other in a schoolyard, one of which appears to be showing the others how to knit. A ball of yarn can be seen at her feet. This figurine was originally designed by master sculptor Reinhold Unger in 1946 and titled “s’meisterstück” (It’s a Masterpiece). It was redesigned in 1960 and released a year later with the “School Girls” name. This collectible figurine is larger than most. It measures about 7 1/2″ tall and the base is 5 7/8″ x 3 1/2. The base is marked with the incised M. There is no label. The underside of the base has the TMK-5 logo (used between 1972 and 1979), the mold number “177/I”, and the incised year “1961”. PLEASE NOTE that there is a scratch ground through a portion of the TMK-5 mark, signifying that this piece is a FACTORY SECOND. I have no idea why, perhaps because the tip of the finger of the little girl knitting is slightly misshaped. Regardless, this beautiful figurine failed Goebel’s rigorous inspection process.
