Ars Sacra, a Swiss art publisher helped to popularize the art on postcards. The “Art Cards” of Hummel became popular throughout Germany. Franz Goebel, a porcelain maker in charge of W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik became interested in the cards and acquired the rights to turn the drawings of Hummel’s into figurines. The first figurines were produced in 1935. Goebel was one of several porcelain firms that competed in the United States market. Franz Goebel specialized in novelty marketing and was able to create a popularity for the figurines in the United States during the 1930s, starting with German Immigrants on the United States East Coast. After WWII, the popularity of Hummel figurines grew when American soldiers stationed in West Germany sent the figurines home as gifts. Hummel figurines became a popular collector’s item.
